About me
I am Brigitte Aflalo-Calderon.
It is through my art that I explore my dual identities between Morocco, my native country, and the USA, my country of adoption. Within this space, I have created a personal universe where both cultures interweave and speak for me.
I began my artistic journey dying fabrics with vegetal pigments. I then transitioned to abstract compositions working on canvas and paper with acrylic paints. In recent years, I have embraced the art of collage with a passion. I love the physical work of tearing apart, cutting, pasting, attaching, un-attaching, over and over again.
In collage nothing is out of bounds. I can use anything from discolored packs of cigarettes, pieces of old lace, family albums or fragments from my own artworks to memorabilia from my travels around the world. Invariably, something unexpected where the real and unreal join, comes to life.
I am continuously experimenting with new materials and tools, such as the digital medium. I feel that manipulating my work digitally enhances its vitality and depth.
As you will notice, a constant in my work is colors, an abundance of them. A tribute to my Moroccan roots.
